The Ophthalmic Forum of Indian Society of Anaesthesiologists (OFISA), was affiliated to the Indian Society of Anaesthesiologists (ISA). The idea for having such a forum was mooted at a meeting in February 2008 by Sankara Nethralaya Chairman Emeritus Dr. S S Badrinath, Dr. Lingam Gopal, Director, Research, Sankara Nethralaya and leading vitreo retinal surgeon and Professor Balakrishnan K, former ISA president. The proposal was approved at ISACON 2008, 56th Annual National Conference of Indian Society of Anaesthesiologists held at Jodhpur, India following which OFISA launched its website (www.ofisa.sankaranethralaya.org) in April 2009. The forum, consisted of around 350 members, mostly Ophthalmic Anaesthesiologists and Ophthalmologists from India and abroad.
OFISA was officially inaugurated by Prof. Chris Dodds, Academic Department of Anaesthesia, The James Cook University Hospital, Middlesbrough, UK on December 27th 2009 at Sankara Nethralaya, Chennai, India. Prof.Chandra M Kumar, Academic Department of Anaesthesia, The James Cook University Hospital, Middlesbrough, UK, Dr G V Rao, Director, ORBIS International, India, Dr Babu Rajendran, President, All India Ophthalmological Society and Dr Manjushree Ray, President ISA were the guests of honour for the inaugural function.
OFISA was established in January 2009 largely with the help of:
OFISA conducted International ophthalmic anaesthesia conference, OFISACON, once in two years and issued Newsletter bi-annually to its members.
Following its huge success and requests from the members, anaesthesiologists from leading eye institute all over India, joined together and established this Association of Indian Ophthalmic Anaesthesiologists, AIOA. registered under Tamil Nadu Societies Registration Act.
On June 2020, AIOA was registered under Tamil Nadu Societies Registration Act.
